Statement of Intent

An Unknown World-
A Place of Natural Phenomenon’s

My Final Major Project is entitled “An Unknown World” inspired by Natural Phenomenon’s, I chose this because I’m always drawn to natural things, but I didn’t want to be limited to just physical forms, I want to research natural occurrences that seem almost supernatural, which I can then translate in to specialist area; fashion/ My final piece will be a collection of garments inspired by my research and experimental and development work. By creating a collection of garments I am extending my knowledge from previous projects as I am creating more than pieces that must be informed by the same ideas but different from one another, this also expands my creative ability as I must be able to visualise and create more than one final design and physical piece.

I intend to research as many different natural phenomenon’s as possible, ranging from microscopic forms, to the happenings of space. By exploring as many as possible it will give me more sources to work from and shall inspire more ideas, as I progress I shall choose a certain range of phenomenon’s, such as, phenomena related to light or ice. To collect much of my information I will need to use scientific websites such as, http://hubblesite.org, and articles from “Geographical” magazine, as well as visiting local museums and galleries. These sources should provide me with accurate information and explanations of natural phenomenon’s as well as providing me with images that I can use as reference material. As well as collecting primary sources, for example photographs of flowers and sunsets, which I can use as inspiration for textile designs.

I will use a range of techniques that will allow me to experiment with textiles, patterns and fabrics; seeing which is most effective and which processes work best. Using transfer prints will allow me to bring an illustrative aspect to my work. But one technique I am keen to experiment with is screen printing, as my subject matter will give me the chance to work with a range of patterns and colours and screen printing would allow me to layer patterns together. Before I get to this stage I plan on using Photoshop to try out different pattern combinations, as well as colours, so that I have a clear idea what I want to achieve with my samples. Photoshop will also allow me to alter the patterns I create so they look as if it is already on fabric, which can then be translated into my fashion

Through out my project I plan on critically analysing my work by comparing it to my other pieces of work throughout my project and gathering the opinions of my peers and tutors. One way I plan on gathering these opinions and recording them is through a Facebook we have set up, which only our class and tutors have access to, this way we can ask each other questions and have answers that are automatically recorded, as well as keeping an online reflective diary.
